Top four things that make a motorhome lose value

Like cars, your motorhome values will inevitably decline over time. There’s not much you can do to stop your motorhome depreciating. But there are things you can do to keep the value as high as possible.

Here’s a quick guide to the four things that might affect your motorhome’s value and how you can minimise their effects.

1. A brand-new motorhome loses value as soon as it leaves the showroom

Having something brand spanking new is always exciting. But when it comes to motorhomes, this can be a rather bad idea. If you buy a motorhome brand new, it will lose its value as soon as you take it out of the showroom. This is due to the VAT you won’t be able to recover, but also because a second-hand motorhome is less desirable than a new one.

2. Poor upkeep

Poor upkeep will automatically depreciate your vehicle. It’s always a good idea to look after your motorhome, especially if you want it to retain as much value as possible. Motorhomes are designed to last, and keeping yours in good condition will certainly act in your favour when it comes to keeping the value as high as possible. Giving your motorhome a good clean every now and then, and keeping on top of repairs and services will guarantee value isn’t lost.

3. Over-personalisation

Another key thing to remember if you’re wanting to maintain value is the importance of maintaining the original fixtures and fittings of your motorhome. Motorhomes hold their value best when they are kept ‘as sold’. It might seem like a nice idea to customise your motorhome with furnishings that reflect your own style, however, your style is obviously very different to others’. So, your personalisation may have a negative effect on the overall value of your motorhome when it comes to selling. There’s no problem replacing some items when they get tired, such as carpets, as this will add value to the vehicle. But when designs, modifications, and colours are highly personalised to individual taste, it harms the value and saleability of your motorhome.

4. Failure to prepare for winter

When you fail to overwinter your motorhome, it could get into a sorry state. Smelly pipes, sticky cupboards and fusty furnishings are all possibilities if you don’t prepare your motorhome for winter. Save yourself the hassle – and some money – by always ensuring you prepare your motorhome properly. Remember to clean it inside and out thoroughly, ensure all furnishings and electricals are removed and that the security system is in check.
