Why taking a bike along with your motorhome is a good idea
Exploring the UK in a motorhome is a wonderful way of unwinding and recharging your batteries and if you are looking to augment the sense of freedom that only a campervan holiday can provide then taking a bike along for the journey is a fantastic bonus.
Here are four reasons why every motorhome owner should never leave home without a trusted bicycle!
- Firstly, a bike allows you to go places that are simply not practical to visit or travel through in a large recreational vehicle. By taking a bicycle on your holiday, you open up a lot more possibilities – and you are also getting plenty of exercise whilst cutting down on expensive fuel costs.
- The second reason that taking a bike on your motorhome trip is a good idea is that some parts of the UK – particularly towns like Bath or York, have some very narrow roads or cobbled streets. In these situations, a bike is much quicker and a lot more practical than driving and will also allow you to enjoy local life on a much more intimate level.
- Thirdly, the UK now has a much more welcoming approach to cyclists. With more and more places now offering specially marked cycle paths and cyclist specific routes, the chance to get out and about is significantly increased for those seeking a welcome break from being stuck behind the wheel – and it also eliminates the chance of ending up stuck in those hard to avoid traffic jams.
- Finally, the UK has some beautiful waterways with several miles of rivers and canals which can only be accessed by foot or bicycle. A journey alongside one of these rivers or canals makes for a wonderful afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Of course, if you are going to take your bicycle on holiday with you on your motorhome trip then always make sure you have the right safety gear. A helmet is an excellent investment if you are planning on cycling out on the roads – and it also makes sense to buy a high visibility vest or jacket so that motorists can see you. This is particularly true during the evenings where being visible can save your life. Reflectors and lights should always be considered mandatory and are a legal requirement when cycling after dark.
