Owning and driving a motorhome can be a brilliant adventure, but it’s crucial to understand the legal requirements before hitting the road. This guide covers the necessary certifications, licences, and legislation for owning, driving, and selling a motorhome in the UK.

Driving licence requirements

The licence you need to drive a motorhome depends on its weight:

Standard car licence (Category B):

  • Sufficient for motorhomes up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM)
  • Covers most smaller motorhomes and campervans

Category C1 licence:

  • Required for motorhomes between 3,500kg and 7,500kg MAM
  • You’ll need to pass an additional test to obtain this licence

Category C licence:

  • Necessary for motorhomes over 7,500kg MAM
  • Involves a more comprehensive test than the C1 licence
Additional certifications

Driver certificate of professional competence (CPC):

  • Not required for private motorhome use
  • Mandatory if you’re using the motorhome for commercial purposes

MOT certificate:

  • Required annually for motorhomes over 3 years old
  • Ensures the vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards
